US President Donald Trump said while speaking to journalists alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Russian president Vladimir Putin is "very serious" about peace negotiations.
The US leader was responding to a question about whether recent attacks on Ukraine indicate that Putin is not serious about negotiations.
“No, he's (Putin - ed.) very serious (about negotiations - ed.). I believe Ukraine has made some strong attacks also. I don't say that's negative. I think they probably have to,” Trump said.
Trump also noted that loud explosions had recently been heard in Russia and suggested that they "possibly came from Ukraine."
Trump–Zelenskyy meeting
As previously reported, on December 26, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he planned to meet with US President Donald Trump to discuss a peace plan. He also noted that important decisions could be made before the New Year.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy plans to raise the issue of territories. According to reports, the talks will include discussions on Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
The Ukrainian president also said that he intends to discuss five key areas with Trump: security guarantees, the military component, Ukraine's recovery, and further steps.
Recently, the Ukrainian president publicly unveiled for the first time a 20-point peace plan agreed with the United States, along with accompanying documents on security guarantees and post-war reconstruction. US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker believes that, with mediation from the White House, a peace agreement could be reached within 90 days.
On Sunday, December 28, Volodymyr Zelenskyy already met with Donald Trump in Florida. The talks between the two leaders are taking place amid active diplomatic engagement over a peace plan for Ukraine.
