US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping plan to meet next Thursday, October 30, during Trump's visit to Asia, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
She said that President Trump is departing on October 24 for Malaysia, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, and will hold a meeting with Xi Jinping on October 30.
The meeting with Xi Jinping comes as Trump canceled a summit in Budapest with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Trump had previously said on October 20 that a meeting with Xi was possible, but this would only be possible at the beginning of 2026.
Earlier in October, Trump also mentioned the possibility of meeting the Chinese leader. However, on October 10, he sharply criticized China, saying that Beijing was "sending letters to countries throughout the world, that they want to impose export controls on each and every element of production having to do with rare earths." Washington considers it unacceptable.
At that time, Trump said there was "no reason" to meet with Xi Jinping. Yet just a week later, the US President unexpectedly began praising the Chinese leader again and expressed his desire to meet Xi in South Korea and make a deal.
