The administration of US President Donald Trump has approved the first two packages of military aid to Ukraine, funded by NATO. They may be sent in the near future, Reuters reports.

It is noted that this is the first use of a new mechanism developed by the US and its allies to supply Ukraine with weapons from US stockpiles using NATO countries’ funds.

According to US Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, the two shipments of weapons under the PURL mechanism amount to $500 million.

PURL mechanism

The PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) mechanism is a new initiative by the US and NATO aimed at accelerating the delivery of weapons to Ukraine. Under this program, Ukraine creates a list of its priority weapon needs, which is then submitted to NATO. Partner countries finance the purchase of US weapons that correspond to this list.

The funds are transferred to a special NATO account, and the weapons are purchased directly from the US. This way, the program ensures fast and targeted support for the Ukrainian armed forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently stated that he expects European countries to allocate €1 billion per month for the purchase of US weapons under the PURL mechanism.
