Ukraine plans to significantly reinforce mobile fire units across several regions to protect civilians against Russia's drone terror, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced following a conference call on February 7.
The Ukrainian leader said he had reviewed reports from all regions after the latest massive assault by Russian forces, who deployed more than 400 drones—most of them Shaheds.
"Unfortunately, there is significant damage to energy infrastructure, which has affected the energy situation across the country, causing widespread outages," Zelenskyy said.
The president also confirmed that a tough discussion was held on the operation of mobile fire units responsible for shooting down Russian drones. Plans are already in place to substantially strengthen these units.
"In the coming days, regional leaders, the Ukrainian Air Force, and the Ministry of Defense must ensure additional reinforcement of the mobile fire unit component within the overall defense system of designated regions," Zelenskyy stated.
Background
Russian forces launched another large-scale attack on Ukraine during the night of February 7, deploying over 400 drones and approximately 40 missiles of various types. Ukraine's air defense destroyed most of the targets.
The primary targets were Ukraine's energy grid, including generation facilities and distribution substations. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said the strikes focused on key 750 kV and 330 kV substations and power lines, which are critical to the country's grid.
Russia's attacks forced temporary reductions in generation at Ukrainian nuclear power plants, and Kyiv urgently requested assistance from Poland. The energy situation remains precarious.
