Russian leader Vladimir Putin made a serious mistake when he began intimidating Ukraine and the world with nuclear weapons, once again demonstrating his weakness, the head of the US National Nuclear Security Administration, Brandon Williams, said, Axios reports.
Putin is publicly bluffing
According to Williams, the Kremlin leader’s nuclear threats indicate that he is not confident in the strength of his army in the war against Ukraine.
That is why Putin’s loud statements are more of an attempt to compensate for battlefield losses. In reality, however, they only expose his weakness.
The senior US official warned that the world is gradually entering a new nuclear era amid sharply escalating tensions between global powers.
"Deterrence isn't quite the same as it was during the Cold War," Williams said.
He also noted that Russia and the United States together control about 85% of the world’s nuclear arsenal. Despite this, Putin’s threats to Ukraine and the world make no sense.
The statement came shortly after Russia and Belarus conducted another round of nuclear drills. Experts pointed out that Moscow’s recent nuclear threats often coincide with the Russian army's failures in the war against Ukraine.
The US official stressed that such nuclear sabre-rattling, frequently used by Putin, will not intimidate Ukraine’s allies.
The US State Department has publicly acknowledged that Ukraine is winning the war against Russia.
Despite this, the threat from Russia still exists for Ukraine’s allies. That is why some of Russia’s neighbors have decided to host NATO nuclear weapons on their territory.
It has also recently been reported that Russia is building up its military and nuclear forces near Finland’s borders.
