Andy Burnham, who is likely to become Britain’s new prime minister this month, has promised to continue supporting Ukraine at the same level, according to The Times.
Priorities outlined
According to the politician, his foreign policy priorities as head of government will be:
- Enhancing Britain’s national security
- Strengthening existing alliances
- Deepening cooperation with Europe
- Supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Burnham notes that Britain faces an increasingly dangerous world, marked by growing Russian aggression, ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and climate and energy instability.
Defense policy
The politician promises to continue his predecessor’s course of increasing defense spending, strengthening the UK’s role in NATO, and working closely with European countries. According to him, the US will remain the United Kingdom’s most important ally in the areas of defense and security.
Ukraine
Burnham says that the UK’s support for Ukraine will not waver and that British security and broader Euro-Atlantic security are inextricably linked to what is happening in Ukraine.
He emphasizes that Keir Starmer’s government had demonstrated Britain’s leadership by establishing and co-chairing the Coalition of the Willing to support the Ukrainian people.
Personal experience supporting Ukraine
Burnham noted that during his tenure as mayor of Greater Manchester, he personally provided assistance to Kyiv and Lviv and pledged to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
The political crisis in the United Kingdom has intensified following the Labour Party’s crushing defeat in the local elections. Back in May, a group of influential government officials, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, agreed on a joint position regarding the need for a change in leadership.
Burnham had previously been named as Starmer’s leading successor following the expected reshuffle at Downing Street. The successor will have to tackle a systemic crisis, immigration issues, and the consequences of Brexit.
As for Starmer himself, after his resignation, he may take on one of the most influential positions in the world—according to media reports, he is considering the possibility of heading NATO. After his resignation, Starmer may take on one of the most influential positions in the world
