President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated the Ukrainian people on the Day of Dignity and Freedom. She emphasized that the future which the Maidan fought for has finally begun, and it lies within the European Union.

"Ten years of dignity. Pride. Of striving for freedom," began the President of the European Commission in her address.

She said that Ukrainians wrapped themselves in European flags during the events on the Maidan, stood against snipers and special forces, as they had already clearly defined that their future lies in a European state.

"The cold winter nights of Euromaidan have changed Europe forever. Today, it is clearer than ever. The future of Ukraine is in the European Union. The future that the Maidan fought for has finally begun," wrote Ursula von der Leyen.

World leaders' visits to Ukraine for the Day of Dignity and Freedom

On Tuesday, November 21, apart from the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, the Chairman of the European Council, Charles Michel, also arrived in Kyiv.

Politico reported four days ago that Michel would visit the Ukrainian capital on November 21. The sources of the publication stated that Michel would visit Ukraine on the day commemorating the protests on the Maidan, which began on November 21, 2013.

According to President Maia Sandu, their visit with Michel was not coincidental, as it coincided with discussions on the agenda regarding the next steps for Moldova and Ukraine's accession to the EU.

These visits are taking place on the eve of the European Council summit scheduled for December. During the summit, EU leaders will discuss the European Commission's recommendation to start official negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
