Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the country has reached an agreement with Iran to ensure the safe passage of Thai oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, according to The Times of Israel.

“An agreement has been reached to allow Thai oil tankers to transit safely through the Strait of Hormuz,” Charnvirakul said.

Amid rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, the deal carries strategic importance for Thailand, which is seeking to secure its energy supplies.

According to the prime minister, the agreement is expected to ease concerns over fuel imports into the country.

Strait of Hormuz

As a reminder, the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the key routes for global oil trade. In 2025, about 13 million barrels of oil passed through it daily, accounting for roughly 31% of seaborne supplies.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Iranian authorities had already begun charging certain vessels for “safe passage” through the strait. According to sources, the fee could reach up to $2 million per voyage.

In addition, Iran’s parliament has effectively prepared a draft law that would formally introduce such a fee for ensuring the security of ships passing through the strait.

Bloomberg also reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump has begun analyzing the potential impact on the US and global economy if oil prices were to spike to $200 per barrel.
