Leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany, Friedrich Merz, has called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz not to delay the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, according to an interview with Rheinische Post.

"Delays in the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles should stop. Scholz should finally abandon his restraint on this matter. It would be extremely helpful for Ukraine," stated Merz.

He also commented on the German Chancellor's call for allies to intensify efforts to assist Ukraine. The leader of the CDU mentioned that it is a "good message," but it should also apply to Germany itself.

Taurus missiles for Ukraine

In October, German media reported that the German government has no plans to supply long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine soon.

The Wall Street Journal stated that Germany fears confrontation with Russia, and Berlin believes that deploying missiles would require sending its specialists to Ukraine.

However, pressure is mounting in Germany on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to compel him to deliver Taurus missiles to Ukraine. In particular, the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Söder, stated that Taurus would provide Ukraine with the ability to defend against constant drone and missile attacks.

Former President of Germany, Joachim Gauck, also criticized the government's position on supplying long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. He believes that the Bundeswehr should provide them to our country without any "but."
