Russian forces attacked Ukraine with a medium-range ballistic missile, Oreshnik, during the night of January 9. The attack targeted civilians' everyday life amid a severe cooling period, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Ukrainian leader noted that emergency response efforts are ongoing in Kyiv and the region following a massive Russian strike. All necessary services have been deployed. A total of 20 residential buildings have been damaged.

Recovery efforts are ongoing following enemy attacks in the Lviv region and across the country.

Currently, four people have been confirmed killed in Kyiv alone, including an ambulance worker, with dozens injured.

Also, Russian troops launched a repeat strike on one of the residential buildings, exactly while emergency services were assisting in the initial attack.

"In total, 242 drones, 13 ballistic missiles used specifically against energy facilities and civilian infrastructure, including one medium-range Oreshnik ballistic missile, and 22 cruise missiles were launched overnight. The attack came amid a period of severe cooling, deliberately targeting the everyday life of ordinary people," the President stressed.

He added that all necessary measures are being taken to restore heating and electricity to residents.

"Today, a meeting of the Energy Staff will take place, where I will wait for detailed reports on all aspects of the restoration work—timelines, required equipment, and responsible officials," Zelenskyy said.

January 9 attack on Ukraine

During the night of January 9, Russian forces carried out a combined attack on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, using attack drones and ballistic and cruise missiles.

The attack was targeted at the Kyiv region.

In Kyiv, dozens of people were injured, and four were killed. Residential buildings were damaged, and several fires broke out.

During the attack, power disturbances were recorded in Kyiv. Later, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that damage to critical infrastructure is causing disruptions to electricity and water supplies. In several districts of the capital, residents were left without heating.

In addition, a series of loud explosions was heard in Lviv city overnight on January 9. Online reports claimed that Russia had used an Oreshnik ballistic missile.

Ukraine's Air Command West confirmed that the missile flew on a ballistic trajectory at approximately 13,000 kilometers per hour.

The Air Force did not officially confirm the use of the Oreshnik missile, but pointed to the launch site of a medium-range ballistic missile—the Kapustin Yar test range, where missiles of this type are based.
