Many people take vitamin D daily without realizing that one hint can significantly affect the results. It's not the dose, but the way it's taken, specifically, taking it on an empty stomach, according to Health.com.

What happens if vitamin D is taken on empty stomach

The Nutrients indicate that vitamin D is fat-soluble and poorly dissolves in water. For better absorption, it should be taken with fatty foods such as avocado, olive oil, eggs, yogurt, or nuts.

Some vitamin D supplements don't require fatty foods for optimal absorption. Similarly, oil-based vitamin D supplements are less dependent on food intake, likely because the supplement's oil contains fat.

However, taking vitamin D without food can cause stomach discomfort, particularly nausea.

Best time of day to take vitamin D

Take it in the morning, especially if breakfast is the largest meal of the day.

You can also take it in the evening, but it may interfere with melatonin and affect sleep quality. If you have trouble falling asleep or suffer from insomnia, morning or early-day intake is better.

Vitamin D can also be split into multiple doses. You could take half of your daily dose with breakfast and the other half with lunch or dinner. The key is consistency.

Foods to help body absorb vitamin D

Foods to pair with vitamin D for optimal absorption include:

  • Eggs: especially the yolk, which contains healthy fats that enhance vitamin D absorption. Eggs can be combined with olive oil or avocado
  • Nuts and seeds: pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, almonds, and cashews contain fats and magnesium that aid vitamin D absorption
  • Yogurts: a good source of fat, also rich in vitamin K and magnesium, which improve calcium absorption
  • Olive oil and avocado: provide healthy fats that help the body absorb vitamin D more efficiently
