Any discussions about the deployment of Turkish troops in Ukraine are only possible after a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia has been reached, Reuters reports.

Earlier, on November 25, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the forces could include French, British, and Turkish soldiers.

Ankara, which maintained friendly relations with both Moscow and Kyiv during the war, stressed that it was ready to discuss such a deployment only after the conditions for its implementation had been determined.

"First, a ceasefire must be established between Russia and Ukraine. Afterward, a mission framework must be established with a clear mandate, and the extent to which each country will contribute must be determined," the Turkish Ministry of Defense said in a statement at a press briefing.

Background

On Tuesday, November 25, French President Emmanuel Macron said that allies could deploy support forces in Ukraine immediately after signing a peace agreement with Russia.

Macron is convinced that there will be no lasting peace if the Ukrainian army is limited in its ability to defend itself and deter any aggression.

The French President noted that support forces could be deployed away from the front lines, for example, in Kyiv or Odesa.

The United Kingdom also confirmed its position on its readiness to deploy troops in Ukraine after the ceasefire.

Foreign troops in Ukraine

On September 4, a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing was held in Paris with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where possible future security guarantees for Ukraine aimed at ensuring a just and lasting peace were discussed.

Ten countries of the Coalition of the Willing have officially agreed to form support forces to be deployed in Ukraine immediately after the ceasefire, whether in the form of a truce or a peace agreement.
