Surge of magnetic storms will shake the planet — Here's when and who may be affected

From November 24 to 29, increased geomagnetic activity is expected. Magnetic storms are possible, and they can affect both people's well-being and various types of equipment. Individuals with weather-sensitive conditions and those with chronic illnesses should be cautious. Which days in the coming week may be dangerous, who is at risk, and how the impact of magnetic storms on well-being can be reduced.
Magnetic storm forecast for November 24-29
According to the space weather forecast, the last days of November may be accompanied by elevated geomagnetic activity. Although there are no peak forecasts for all days, disturbances at the G1 level (Kp 4-5) are already possible starting from November 24, with gradual changes throughout the period.
Such storms can have various consequences, from affecting electronics to causing physical symptoms in people sensitive to geomagnetic changes.
- November 24, Monday: moderate magnetic storm, Kp 4
- November 25, Tuesday: magnetic storm at the red G1 level (Kp 5-6)
- November 26, Wednesday: magnetic storm at the red G1 level (Kp 5-6)
- November 27, Thursday: magnetic storm at the red G1 level (Kp 5-6)
- November 28, Friday: beginning of a decrease to a moderate storm, Kp 3-4
- November 29, Saturday: another rise to a moderate storm, Kp 4
What a magnetic storm is and how it forms
A geomagnetic storm is a disturbance of the Earth's magnetic field caused by a stream of charged particles from the sun (for example, a coronal mass ejection). When such a flow reaches Earth, its magnetosphere shifts, triggering disturbances known as magnetic storms.
The intensity of such storms is measured on the Kp scale:
- Kp 3-4 is moderate activity, with possible mild discomfort.
- Kp 5-7 and above are strong disturbances that can affect both equipment and well-being.
How it affects equipment
There may be disruptions in satellite systems and GPS. Navigation services may provide inaccurate data or experience failures.
Communication: radio and other communication lines may malfunction.
Power grids: voltage fluctuations are possible, especially in sensitive electrical systems or during periods of peak demand.
How a magnetic storm affects people
Even a moderate storm can cause:
- Headache
- Migraine
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Drowsiness
- Irritability or mood swings
- Reduced concentration and attention
- Lack of strength and energy
- Flare-ups of chronic conditions
These symptoms are prevalent in weather-sensitive individuals.
Who is at risk
Those most sensitive to geomagnetic disturbances include:
- People with cardiovascular diseases
- Patients with hypertension
- Weather-sensitive and weather-dependent individuals
- Elderly people
- Those with chronic neurological or endocrine disorders
How to prepare and reduce the impact
Maintain a healthy lifestyle by getting enough sleep, eating well, and minimizing stress.
Fresh-air walks, physical activity, and regular ventilation can help stabilize your well-being.
Drink enough water, rest, and avoid overexertion physically, mentally, and emotionally.
People with chronic conditions should follow their prescribed medication regimen and keep a supply of necessary medicines.
