Subject of active discussion: US on permission for Ukraine to strike Russia with ATACMS
The supply of ATACMS missiles to Ukraine is the subject of active discussion. This issue may be resolved through negotiations, according to a statement from US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.
Campbell reminded that the US is one of the main suppliers of military aid to Ukraine. He noted that a significant portion of it was provided on time, and the US also assisted with military training.
"Ultimately, I think there is a recognition that some of this is going to have to be dealt with... at the negotiating table. And hope will be that at some point in the not-so-distant future, we will find ourselves in the way that some kind of diplomatic engagement," he replied when asked about ATACMS.
He also told the journalist that there is no answer yet regarding the use of ATACMS.
Restrictions on weapon use
Ukraine has received long-range missiles from its partners, including Storm Shadow, ATACMS, and SCALP. However, some countries, including the US and the UK, have imposed restrictions on their use. Ukraine is urging for these restrictions to be lifted for strikes on Russian territory.
This issue was discussed by the US Secretary of State and the UK Foreign Secretary during a meeting with President Zelenskyy in Kyiv. It may also be raised with US President Joe Biden during Zelenskyy's visit to the US.
The Guardian reported that the US and the UK have already made a decision regarding Ukrainian strikes on Russia, but have not yet announced it. This issue was also discussed during the president's trip to the US.
