Russian strike hits Odesa’s historic center, damages 15 monuments
In Odesa, around 15 monuments were damaged due to shelling in the city center. The historic center of Odesa is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, emphasizes Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov on Telegram.
The building of the Bristol hotel suffered significant damage, the extent of which has yet to be determined. According to the mayor, this is one of the most distinctive architectural structures in the city's central area.
"As a result of the powerful blast wave, nearby historical buildings were also affected. About 15 cultural heritage monuments sustained damage of varying severity," Trukhanov reported.
The main damage includes broken windows and displaced woodwork. Among the affected sites are two national landmarks: the Philharmonic (New Exchange) and the Vuchini House (19 Italian Street), as well as two museums — the Museum of Western and Eastern Art and the branch of the Literary Museum (Sikar House).
The stained glass and authentic woodwork of large semicircular windows in the buildings of the Union of Architects of Ukraine and the Porto-Franco Bank also sustained significant damage.
According to Trukhanov, the most valuable of the damaged buildings is the Philharmonic (New Exchange). Since 2023, the building of the Philharmonic has been under enhanced protection by UNESCO.
