Even ordinary daily actions can silently accelerate aging. Here’s what to avoid to maintain youth, according to Eating Well.

Too much sitting

Most people spend much of their day sitting at a desk, in a car, or on the couch to relax. But these hours can quietly affect long-term health.

A study published in the Korean Journal of Family Medicine found that total sedentary time over 10–11 hours a day, or screen time over 5–6 hours daily, significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease even in people who exercise regularly.

Inactivity gradually impairs muscle quality and mitochondrial function. Muscles are one of the strongest predictors of healthy aging, independence, and resilience.

A sedentary lifestyle also slows metabolism, reduces circulation and heart function, and disrupts hormonal balance.

Insufficient sleep

Getting too little sleep at night is linked to about a 15% increase in all-cause mortality. Sleeping less than six to seven hours a night is also associated with higher risks of cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, depression, and dementia.

Over time, poor sleep can even speed up your biological clock, increasing inflammation and oxidative stress—two key factors in premature aging.

Prioritizing quality sleep is one of the most effective strategies to support long-term health and slow down aging.

Chronic stress

Everyone has stressful days, and occasional stress is normal. But living in a constant state of stress without moments of calm can seriously impact health.

Persistent stress raises cortisol levels, accelerating muscle loss, insulin resistance, immune dysfunction, and even skin aging.

Over time, stress can also lead to unhealthy coping behaviors, such as poor diet, disrupted sleep, or inactivity, which worsen its effects.

Chronic stress is linked to higher rates of cardiovascular disease, depression, immune aging, cognitive decline, and a shorter period of healthy life.

Consuming large amounts of ultra-processed foods

Most foods undergo some processing before reaching the grocery store. The key is to distinguish processed foods from ultra-processed ones.

Ultra-processed foods are made from refined ingredients, additives, and little to no whole foods.

These products displace nutrients that protect the heart, brain, and immune system. Regular consumption is associated with higher risks of heart disease, weight gain, high blood pressure, fatty liver, and cognitive decline.
