Amid the sharp cold snap and ongoing fighting, the protection of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has once again become a focus of international discussions. Particular attention was given to nighttime attacks that occurred during extremely low temperatures.

Discussion between London and Washington

A statement from the Office of the British Prime Minister reports a phone conversation between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders discussed the current situation in Ukraine.

Special attention was paid to Russia’s strikes on energy infrastructure, which took place at night.

The document emphasizes that the attacks occurred at a time when temperatures dropped to critically low levels.

According to the British side, such actions significantly increase humanitarian risks for civilians and pose additional threats to the stable operation of critical systems.

Assessment of infrastructure attacks

The statement notes that the strikes on energy facilities were carried out under weather conditions that considerably worsened the situation. London highlighted the particular danger of such actions during extreme cold.

"Putin’s fierce attacks on critical national infrastructure, including energy systems, were particularly depraved as temperatures dropped below -20C, the Prime Minister added," the statement said.

International context

The Office of the British Prime Minister stressed that the discussion of attacks on energy infrastructure was part of a broader dialogue on the situation in Ukraine and Russia’s ongoing actions, which directly affect the living conditions of civilians.

White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt stated that US President Donald Trump was not surprised by Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure or the violation of the so-called "energy truce."

Despite previous agreements on a week-long pause in attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Russia carried out the largest strike of the year.

The reasons for the breakdown of the so-called "energy truce" and its impact on future negotiations in Abu Dhabi remain unclear, including the uncertain start and end dates of the pause and the possible use of the temporary halt to prepare an especially powerful strike.
