South Korean court begins impeachment case proceedings: How much time for decision
The Constitutional Court of South Korea will begin hearing a case on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol on Monday, December 16. The case concerns his attempt to impose martial law in the country on December 3, reports Yonhap.
According to the spokesperson for South Korea's Constitutional Court (CC), investigators plan to question President Yoon Suk Yeol this week.
It is noted that all six current judges of the Constitutional Court will be present at the first hearing regarding the impeachment.
On Saturday, the National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon Suk Yeol due to his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.
The court now has up to six months to decide whether to remove the president from office or reinstate him.
A joint team of investigators from the police, Ministry of Defense, and anti-corruption agency plans to summon Yoon for questioning on Wednesday, December 18.
On December 15, President Yoon did not appear for questioning in a separate investigation by the prosecution.
Situation with the impeachment of the South Korean president
On December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in the country, which sparked an angry reaction from the opposition and society. The martial law lasted about six hours and was accompanied by protests in Seoul. Following this, the president revoked the decision and issued an apology. However, the situation did not end there.
The opposition in South Korea issued a harsh ultimatum for the president to resign. It was also reported that law enforcement had launched an investigation against the president.
As part of the investigation, the police searched Yoon’s office.
It is important to note that President Yoon Suk Yeol faced a second attempt at impeachment.
In response, President Yoon promised to fight for his political future.
Previously, it was reported that due to the impeachment announcement, the duties of the president were temporarily assumed by the Prime Minister of South Korea, Han Duck-soo.
