A South Korean soldier accidentally opened fire from a machine gun towards the North Korean side of the inter-Korean border. Seoul informed Pyongyang about the incident, reports Yonhap News Agency.

It is reported that the shooting incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the demilitarized zone, which separates the two Koreas in the Cheorwon district, about 70 kilometers north of Seoul.

It is noted that a soldier of the Republic of Korea’s Armed Forces accidentally fired a burst from a K6 heavy machine gun from a guard post near the border area.

Military officials from South Korea stated on Sunday that after the incident, they activated a broadcast to immediately inform North Korea about the shooting.

Additionally, South Korean military officials speculated that the bullets did not reach North Korean territory, as traces of the ammunition were found on reinforced doors, which could have slowed them down.

Furthermore, the South Korean Armed Forces declared that no unusual signs of military activity from North Korea had been detected so far.

It was reported on April 8 that North Korean soldiers crossed the border into South Korea, prompting warning shots. In Seoul, it was mentioned that around 10 North Korean soldiers breached the demarcation line.

It was also reported that in January, the South Korean Ministry of Defense dismissed accusations that the suspension of the inter-Korean military agreement and the resumption of propaganda through loudspeakers at the border with North Korea were aimed at provoking Pyongyang ahead of the president's declaration of martial law in December.
