The military of North Korea violated the demarcation line, prompting South Korean soldiers to open warning fire, Reuters reports.

According to South Korea's military, about 10 North Korean soldiers violated the demarcation line.

They returned after warning fire.

“Our military is closely monitoring the North Korean military's activity and taking necessary measures according to the operational procedures,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Relations between North Korea and South Korea

Relations between North Korea and South Korea have remained tense and unstable since the end of the Korean War, which ended in an armistice but not a peace agreement. Both countries are formally at war, and the Demilitarized Zone remains one of the most militarized areas in the world.

Despite individual episodes of diplomatic initiatives, no lasting progress has been made in rapprochement. The main obstacles remain the DPRK's nuclear program, South Korea's regular military exercises with the United States, and ideological differences.

In February, South Korea announced its readiness to accept North Korean soldiers captured by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
