South Korea imposes sanctions against North Korea due to launch of new ballistic missiles
South Korea has imposed new sanctions against North Korea. This is related to the recent launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, Nknews.org reports.
South Korea stated that the missile launch poses a threat to "peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and the international community" and announced new measures to restrict North Korea's ballistic missile development.
Overall, the export control covers 15 components necessary for the development and production of solid-fuel missiles, which are difficult for North Korea to produce domestically.
These include:
- solid fuel
- fuselages
- combustion chambers and nozzles
- carbon cylinders
- natural rubber and components, among others.
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the action was also aimed at raising awareness within the international community about the need to prevent North Korea from acquiring critical items for the development of solid-fuel missiles, thereby further limiting its ballistic missile program.
It should be noted that around 12:10 AM Kyiv time on October 31, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) conducted a test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile.
Nuclear threats from North Korea and Russia
Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed expanding the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons in an attempt to intensify pressure on Western countries and Ukraine's allies.
However, as noted by Time, Western leaders are becoming less fearful of Russia's nuclear threats and are consistently supporting Ukraine. In September, North Korea joined this rhetoric, backing the intimidation efforts from Russia. Recently, Russia began nuclear exercises, likely aimed at pressuring the US and Ukraine's supporters.
