The full-scale war in Ukraine can only end at the negotiating table, not through military means, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said during the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk.

"I believe that the EU should support peace initiatives. This destructive war does not have a military solution and can be stopped at the negotiating table," he stressed.

Fico noted that the full-scale war in Ukraine is "causing enormous human suffering and devastation," and that its consequences are being felt far beyond the country's borders.

"For us, in Slovakia, there is no better alternative to the full respect for international law, based on the key UN Charter provisions. So our government ladies and gentlmen goes always for more diplomacy," the Slovak prime minister emphasized.

He added that, according to the latest discussions among European leaders, more and more European Union member states see the advantages of such an approach.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov recently said that, to take part in negotiations, the European Union must recognize the real state of affairs, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine. He also claimed that Russia was not the one that initiated the suspension of dialogue with Europe.

At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the G7 leaders and US President Donald Trump had concluded that Russia had no serious intention of engaging in negotiations.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni plans to propose a candidate for an EU negotiator on the war in Ukraine at the upcoming summit. The position could be entrusted to a representative of one of the medium-sized countries.
