Slovak representatives visit Kyiv: Fico reacts, threatens Ukraine
Slovak deputies visited Kyiv, which angered their Prime Minister Robert Fico. He called it a "gesture of sycophancy" and threatened Ukraine, Pravda reports.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was angry about the recent visit of his parliamentarians to Kyiv and called it a "gesture of sycophancy."
Fico emphasized that the opposition MPs were allegedly preparing for a coup d'état. However, the Slovak prime minister said, the current government "will be ready for anything, especially a possible Maidan."
He spoke indignantly about the Slovak opposition "kissing Zelenskyy's ring" and allegedly promising him support for Ukraine's NATO membership if they came to power.
According to Fico, they allegedly said that Slovakia would join in sending a contingent of Western troops to Ukraine. However, Fico considers this the most dangerous moment of the opposition's trip to Kyiv.
"The government I lead will never support Ukraine's membership in NATO, because it will only lead to a third world war. The government will also never offer to send troops to Ukraine to use their weapons against Russia," he said.
The Slovak prime minister emphasized that he plans to "respond" to the termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine and threatened to veto further EU aid to Kyiv.
"Robert Fico is the Slovak prime minister, not a Ukrainian servant," Fico said.
On January 17, Fico complained to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that Ukraine had stopped transiting Russian gas on January 1, 2025.
According to him, he has been proposing to meet with Zelenskyy for several days now on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and even named a possible date of January 21.
Earlier it was reported that the Ukrainian president might come to the forum, but his trip was not officially announced.
This week, Fico called him to the Slovak-Ukrainian border and offered to use the Kyiv-Kosice train. Zelenskyy responded by inviting him to come to Kyiv on January 17. The Slovak prime minister refused.
