Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has called on the EU to lift sanctions on Russian oil and gas and take steps to resume deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline.

Fico's statement followed a phone conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The Slovak premier wrote on his social media that the EU must restore dialogue with Russia and create conditions that allow member states to replenish missing energy supplies.

"The EU, and specifically the European Commission, must immediately resume dialogue with Russia and establish political and legal conditions that allow individual member states, and the EU as a whole, to replenish missing gas and oil reserves and secure deliveries of this strategic raw material from all possible sources and routes, including Russia," Fico wrote.

He also claims that the EU and European Commission are beginning to resemble a "suicide ship" when it comes to energy security.

Russia profits from Iran war

Earlier, by the end of 2025 and into early 2026, oil prices had fallen significantly. However, the US-Israeli operation against Iran, launched in late February, drastically changed the situation. Tehran blocked the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's oil passes, causing a shortage and sharp price increases.

In response, the United States took measures to stabilize oil prices. One solution was a partial lifting of sanctions on Russia, which boosted Russian revenues.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly told the United States that Russia is sharing intelligence with Iran. He also noted that it is in Russia's interest to prolong the war in Iran, as it allows Moscow to earn more money, which can then be used to fund its war against Ukraine.

Previously, the media reported that Russia is close to completing phased deliveries of drones, medical supplies, and food to Iran.
