Scientists reported that women with Alzheimer’s disease show a significant decrease in unsaturated fats, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, according to the journal Alzheimer's and Dementia.

Interestingly, men with the disease do not show such a pronounced difference. This suggests that omega-3 deficiency may play a specific role in the development of Alzheimer’s in women.

Why are women more affected?

According to neurologist Doha Ayish, these findings help explain why Alzheimer’s disease may progress differently in women and men. It also clarifies why women account for nearly two-thirds of all cases. Fortunately, there is good news: a diet rich in omega-3, such as salmon, walnuts, or chia seeds, can be a key tool for prevention.

Benefits beyond brain health

According to the experts, omega-3 is important not only for brain function. It also supports bone, cardiovascular, and reproductive health in women. Research shows that these essential fats reduce the risk of osteoporosis, protect the heart, and may improve fertility, even in cases of polycystic ovary syndrome.

How to get enough omega-3?

The human body does not produce omega-3 on its own, so they must be obtained from food or supplements. Key sources include:

  • Fish (salmon, mackerel, herring)

  • Walnuts

  • Chia and flax seeds

  • Fortified eggs and dairy products

If you rarely eat these foods, specialists recommend high-quality supplements. Choose those tested by independent laboratories to ensure safety and effectiveness.
