Shooting in NYC center leaves 4 dead, multiple wounded - NYP

On Monday, July 28, a shooting occurred in downtown New York City. A man armed with a rifle killed and injured several people before taking his own life, according to the New York Post.
According to the latest reports, a police officer and four others were shot dead (the officer later died in the hospital). Six more people were injured. The incident took place in a skyscraper in Midtown, after which the shooter turned the weapon on himself.
What happened, and who is the shooter
According to The New York Times, the shooter was identified as a 27-year-old man named Shane Tamaru, according to sources.
According to reports, he stormed into a 44-story building housing investment companies Blackstone and the NFL headquarters. Around 6:30 p.m., during a rush of people, the shooter opened fire with a rifle, forcing workers to flee for safety.
After opening fire, Tamaru barricaded himself inside the skyscraper and was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This happened on the 33rd floor, where other victims were also found.
Footage released by the media showed the shooter from Las Vegas calmly walking around the plaza near the skyscraper’s entrance on Park Avenue with an automatic rifle in hand before carrying out the attack. It should be noted that the incident occurred in downtown Manhattan.
Following the event, the area around the building was swarming with police officers, fire trucks, ambulances, and rescuers, with helicopters circling overhead. FBI agents and bomb squads also arrived at the scene.
According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamaru likely acted alone.
“The scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
It is currently known that the police confiscated the shooter’s weapon, an AR-15 assault rifle manufactured by Palmetto State Armory.
Meanwhile, sources told The New York Times that the death toll is expected to rise. So far, as mentioned earlier, 5 people are confirmed dead and 6 are injured.
