American actor Sean Penn won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. It is now known why he skipped the award ceremony, according to The New York Times.
Why Sean Penn missed the Oscar ceremony
Penn won the award for his director role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film One Battle After Another. This is already the actor’s third Oscar in his career.
However, he was absent during the ceremony itself. Sources said the actor left the US and traveled to Europe. According to journalists’ sources, he planned a trip to Ukraine.
The exact details of the route or purpose of the trip were not disclosed. The actor’s representative refused to comment.
During the announcement of the winner, the award was accepted on Penn’s behalf by the ceremony host Kieran Culkin, who joked that the actor "couldn’t be here tonight or just didn’t want to be."
Sixth nomination and third win for Sean Penn
This is already Penn’s third Oscar win. He previously received Oscars for his roles in Mystic River and Milk. Overall, the actor has been nominated six times.
Penn also received several other awards for his role in One Battle After Another, including a BAFTA and a Screen Actors Guild Award. It is known that he also skipped these award ceremonies.
