Authorities activated the Red Intervention Plan, a special response protocol for high-risk emergencies.
Romanian Prime Minister and President Nicușor Dan, who was traveling by plane to Montenegro for the European Union–Western Balkans summit at the time, was also urgently informed about the incident.
Romania's Ministry of Internal Affairs has already announced a press conference regarding the incident.
The country's Ministry of Defense said that the drone allegedly resembles those used in the war in Ukraine.
"Preliminary information indicates that it was a Ukrainian drone carrying dozens of kilograms of explosives. The explosion was not controlled. It is unclear how the sea drone ended up in Constanța port," Digi24 writes.
Russian drones in Romania
On the night of May 29, during another Russian attack on Ukraine, a Russian drone struck the roof of an apartment building in Galați. A fire broke out on the 10th floor, and two people were injured.
The Romanian Air Force explained that it physically did not have enough time to intercept the drone. Only four minutes passed between the target being detected and its impact.
Romania's Ministry of National Defense later determined that the residential building had been struck by a Russian Geran-2 drone (a Shahed-type drone).
