Scholz's party calls for Ukraine-Russia negotiation group
The leader of the parliamentary faction of Germany's Social Democratic Party, Rolf Mützenich, has proposed creating an international contact group for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. This party is led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, reports Rheinische Post.
"Chancellor and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agree that now is a good time to intensify efforts for peace negotiations and that Russia should also be present at the next peace summit. I strongly welcome this," he said.
The politician believes this provides an opportunity for other countries to ramp up efforts to end hostilities.
"In my view, it is time for Western allies to initiate a contact group to start the process," Mützenich stated.
The MP mentioned that the contact group should include China, India, Turkey, and Brazil to play a mediating role.
"These countries are increasingly convinced that the Russian aggressive war could become a burden. Therefore, the work of the contact group could be promising and play an important mediating role," the German politician explained.
Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia
It should be noted that Ukraine and Russia held several rounds of negotiations at the beginning of the full-scale war. However, Ukraine later abandoned them due to Russia’s ultimatum demands.
Earlier, Ukraine presented its peace formula, and in June, the first peace summit was held. A second peace summit is planned for November, and it is possible that representatives from Russia may be invited.
Two weeks ago, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a plan for victory in the war. For more details about it, see RBC-Ukraine’s article.
