Scholz intends to resume talks with Putin soon
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to resume talks with Russian president Vladimir Putin, reports ARD Mediathek. The last time they spoke was in 2022.
Scholz intends to speak with the Russian leader "at the right time."
"But I am a responsible politician, I will not do this alone," he said, adding that dialogue with Putin would require many contacts and negotiations with many other people.
He also notes that talks with Putin should also be discussed with Ukraine.
Asked when negotiations between him and the Russian would take place, the chancellor replied: "Soon."
Talks with Putin
The last phone contact between the German chancellor and the Russian president, as mentioned above, took place in December 2022. Other Western leaders have also not had direct talks with Putin for a long time. Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron last spoke to him by phone during the same year.
A representative of the German federal government, Steffen Hebestreit, said that Scholz was ready to resume contact if he believed it could bring concrete results.
At the end of 2023, Scholz claimed that negotiations would be possible only if Russian troops were completely withdrawn from Ukrainian territory.
