Satellites and more: Ukraine's MoD unveils plans for space forces

Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense for Digital Development, Digital Transformations, and Digitization, Kateryna Chernogorenko, announced during the international forum "Space For Ukraine" that the Defense Ministry has established the Space Policy Directorate. The directorate will collaborate with developers of military space technologies, including satellites and missiles, handle procurement, and shape state policy in this field, according to an RBC-Ukraine correspondent.
"We have launched an institution that will serve as an integrator for all decisions related specifically to military space... This directorate was established this year... We have created the Space Policy Directorate," she said.
According to Chernogorenko, the Defense Ministry aims to become the primary customer for space technology and software for Ukraine’s Defense Forces.
"We want the Defense Ministry to be the integrator of space solutions for the Defense Forces, possessing the expertise to formulate technical requirements," she explained.
She also hinted at the possible creation of a new branch of the military.
"Ukraine is moving toward the establishment of space forces. The vast majority of our partner nations are developing this branch of the military. And, of course, our enemy is also advancing in this field, acquiring new capabilities and technologies. We must provide these capabilities to our military," the deputy minister stated.
Chernogorenko added that by 2030, Ukraine plans to have national satellites for defense purposes, along with an air raid alert system and space monitoring capabilities.
