Sanctions and weapons instead of talks: Ukraine outlines path to compromises with Russia

Real compromises on Russia’s part are only possible under conditions of strong pressure. This involves a combination of sanctions, active military support for Ukraine, and the continuation of dialogue with the participation of the US and Europe, the President of Ukraine stated this during an interaction with journalists.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia can only be convinced to make compromises through real pressure, not formal talks.
"Talk, and not just on the phone, but talk with sanctions, talk with military support for Ukraine," the president said.
He noted that some processes, particularly regarding the strengthening of air defense, have recently slowed down, a fact clearly observed by the Russian side. This, he said, is why Moscow focuses on pauses and weak points in support for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy stressed that the US must apply stronger pressure on Russia, while also acknowledging the extensive work of the American team. According to him, in December, US and Ukrainian representatives engaged in extremely intensive cooperation, for which he expressed his gratitude.
The president also pointed out that there is no quick alternative to the current dialogue format. In theory, Europe could take the lead if the US steps back from an active role, but Zelenskyy believes that the European path would not be faster than the American one.
"A lot has already been achieved here. We must respect people’s work and time, because every minute of delay means more suffering for people in Ukraine," the president said.
Previously, Ukraine has repeatedly stated that any negotiations with Russia must be based on the principle of strength, not concessions to the aggressor. Kyiv insists on increased sanctions pressure and steady arms supplies, including air defense systems.
In recent months, the US and European partners have been holding consultations on further steps to support Ukraine, although discussions have often been accompanied by delays in decision-making.
Peace plan for Ukraine
Today, January 3, a series of meetings took place in Kyiv, during which advisors from the Coalition of the Willing worked on a peace plan along with accompanying documents. On Tuesday, January 6, the draft will be discussed by coalition leaders in Paris.
In December, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly released all 20 points of the peace plan, which Ukraine is developing together with the US. The American side is currently discussing the document with representatives of Russia.
Earlier, Zelenskyy announced a new meeting with US President Donald Trump at the end of January to discuss the peace plan.
