Sabotage at NATO airbase in Germany to be investigated as illegal entry
The Cologne police announced that the incident at the military airbase in western Germany will be investigated as illegal entry, Spiegel reports.
According to Spiegel, the military police and the Bundeswehr Military Counterintelligence Service are investigating suspicions of a sabotage operation. Specifically, it has been discovered that one of the barracks was broken into.
Authorities also suspect that the base's drinking water has been contaminated. Soldiers and civilians have been advised not to consume drinking water under any circumstances. Currently, soldiers are no longer being allowed onto the base.
It is worth noting that the barracks in Köln-Wahn house several command centers, as well as military and civilian departments of the Bundeswehr. The German Air Force is based there, as the barracks are directly adjacent to Cologne Airport. In total, the facility employs 4,300 soldiers and 1,200 civilian staff.
