US arrest turns deadly as man shoots officers, casualties reported

On Wednesday, September 17, a deadly shooting occurred in North Codorus Township, York County (Pennsylvania, USA), leaving three law enforcement officers dead and two others seriously wounded, according to Reuters.
State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris said the incident happened when officers returned to the scene of an earlier case related to a domestic dispute. When they confronted the suspect, gunfire broke out.
The suspect was shot dead by police. His identity has not yet been disclosed. The wounded officers remain in the hospital in critical but stable condition.
Local media reports that the officers may have been attempting to serve a search warrant when the tragedy unfolded.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro visited the hospital to honor the fallen officers. He called the incident an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and the entire Commonwealth and urged citizens to keep the officers’ families in their prayers.
US federal authorities pledged to provide any necessary support for the investigation.
Police activity in the US
In Los Angeles, police recently fired over a thousand rounds at protesters in a single day during demonstrations against Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Josh Parker, deputy director of policy at the Policing Project at New York University, stressed that such use of force is excessive and violates standards of safe crowd control.
Unsurprisingly, in the wake of a series of high-profile killings, crime control has become a top issue on the US political agenda.
Meanwhile, Trump has threatened to declare a state of emergency in Washington, D.C., if federal authorities allow crime to rise after the city government decides to end cooperation with immigration enforcement.
On August 21, he also stated his intention to patrol the streets of Washington alongside military and police forces.
