The Russian army deliberately targeted boiler houses in various districts of Kyiv during the night of January 9. This is energy terrorism and yet another attempt by Russia to turn winter into a weapon, according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.
The Prime Minister said she had already received reports from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Energy, and the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development on their efforts to deal with the aftermath of another massive Russian attack. Russian forces were hitting Kyiv and other cities for nearly five hours, striking primarily civilian infrastructure and residential buildings.
"More than 240 drones and 36 missiles were used. In the capital, four people were killed, and 25 were injured. My heartfelt condolences to the families," she said.
Yulia Svyrydenko also noted that some districts of Kyiv are currently experiencing disruptions in water and electricity supply due to damage to substations, power lines, and generation facilities caused by the Russian attack. About 500,000 consumers are left without power. Restoration work is ongoing, and emergency and hourly outages are in effect.
"This time, the enemy deliberately targeted district boiler houses—this is energy terrorism and an attempt to turn winter into a weapon," Svyrydenko added.
She also said that Russian attacks once again left the city of Slavutych without power. In addition, severe weather has caused power outages in several settlements across most regions. Emergency crews are currently working to restore the electricity supply.
January 9 attack on Ukraine: information available so far
As of January 9, parts of Kyiv remain without water due to another wave of enemy attacks. Russian strikes cut power to key water infrastructure facilities in the capital.
During the night of January 9, Russian forces once again carried out a combined attack on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, using attack drones and ballistic and cruise missiles. In particular, Russia struck Ukraine with a medium-range Oreshnik ballistic missile. The attack targeted civilians' everyday life amid a severe cooling period.
The enemy attacked Kyiv with drones and missiles from multiple directions, making it difficult to intercept such a large number of hostile targets simultaneously. Overall, Ukraine's air defense forces shot down or suppressed 244 out of 278 aerial targets launched at the country.
