Following the Russian strikes on Chornomorsk, a spill of sunflower oil occurred in the port’s waters, and a massive oil slick was spotted at sea, according to the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.
"On April 26, 2026, as a result of Russian strikes on the city of Chornomorsk, the infrastructure of the Chornomorsk commercial seaport was damaged. During the fire, a 6,000-ton sunflower oil tank was destroyed," the Environmental Inspection notes.
The relevant services promptly contained the consequences of the accident. Barriers were installed on the site to prevent the spread of the spill, and the storm sewer system was shut off to prevent product residues from entering the aquatic environment.
"State inspectors conducted an on-site inspection during their visit. No soil contamination was detected, as the area has a concrete surface. At the same time, an oil spill into the port’s water area was detected," adds the Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.
A slick approximately 400 by 200 meters in size formed on the water’s surface. Boom barriers have been deployed to contain it.
The inspection agency collected seawater samples for laboratory testing. The test results will allow for determining the actual level of contamination and calculating the damage.
"A final assessment of the damage to the marine environment caused by the armed aggression will be conducted after receiving the full set of necessary data," the specialists emphasize.
