Russia launches ballistic missile attack on port of Chornomorsk: One person injured, oil spill reported

Russian occupying forces launched a ballistic missile attack on the port of Chornomorsk in the Odesa region during the daytime on January 15. One person was injured in the attack, and an oil spill occurred, according to statements from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksiy Kuleba and the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (AMPU).
According to Kuleba, the Russian army struck a berth at the port of Chornomorsk with a ballistic missile. At the time of the strike, a civilian vessel flying the Maltese flag was there, preparing to transport containerized cargo.
As a result of the attack, one crew member was injured. Three containers were damaged, resulting in an oil spill. Efforts are currently underway to contain the consequences of the Russian attack, with boom barriers already deployed.
"This is another act of Russian terror against civilian port infrastructure, international trade, and maritime safety. Russia is deliberately attacking facilities that ensure exports, logistics, and food security," Kuleba said.
According to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (AMPU), the attack caused a fire, and several containers carrying oil were damaged. The Maltese-flagged vessel sustained damage. Work is ongoing to prevent pollution of the port’s waters as a result of the attack.

On December 13, Russian forces attacked the civilian Turkish vessel VIVA, which was carrying sunflower oil from Ukraine to Egypt. The drone strike occurred in the open sea, within Ukraine’s exclusive economic zone, and outside the coverage area of Ukrainian air defense.
In late December, Russian attacks also damaged facilities at the ports of Pivdennyi and Chornomorsk, including oil storage tanks belonging to an industrial enterprise. The attack caused an oil leak and environmental pollution.
