The number of casualties in Sumy has increased following the Russian missile strike carried out by the enemy on the evening of November 17. As of now, 10 fatalities have been reported, including two children, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) and the Sumy Regional Military Administration.

It is reported that on Sunday, the Russian army launched a missile strike on a densely populated residential area of Sumy, with the impact occurring near a nine-story apartment building.

The State Emergency Service (SES) informed that as a result of the attack, 10 people were killed, including two children.

Additionally, emergency services reported that 51 people were injured, including 5 children. However, the Sumy Regional Military Administration clarified that among the fatalities were a 9-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl. At that time, 52 people were confirmed to be wounded.

Later, it was reported that the number of casualties had risen again. According to a statement from the Sumy City Council at 23:46, 55 people were injured, including 8 children.

"Rescuers and all necessary services continue to work at the site of the tragedy. Over 400 residents have been evacuated from damaged buildings. A resilience point has been set up by the SES. SES psychologists are assisting the victims," emergency services reported.

The State Emergency Service (SES) reported that as a result of the Russian shelling, the windows of six ten-story buildings were damaged, and four cars were destroyed.

According to the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Volodymyr Artyukh, Sunday evening turned into hell, a tragedy brought by Russia to our land.

"Rescuers, volunteers, and police are working here. Over 400 residents of the damaged buildings are being evacuated. A headquarters has been set up, and resilience points are operating. Residents of neighboring buildings and even from other districts of the city are helping the victims," the official said.

SES also added that in Sumy, a door-to-door check is being carried out in all damaged buildings to check every corner and find the victims.

Days of mourning - November 18-19

The Sumy Regional Council has announced that November 18-19 will be days of mourning for the victims of the Russian shelling in Sumy.

Additionally, as reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General, under the procedural guidance of the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office, a pretrial investigation has been initiated on the grounds of violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

It was previously reported that on November 17, Russian military forces struck a high-rise building in Sumy at approximately 8:40 p.m. Kyiv time.

Later, local authorities confirmed that as a result of the enemy shelling, 8 people were killed in Sumy, including two children. Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, stated that over 400 people were evacuated from the damaged building in the city.
