Russian guided bomb hits school in Sumy during classes, students and teachers were in shelter

Russian forces dropped four guided aerial bombs on Sumy. One of the strikes hit a school building. There are people killed and injured in the city, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Sumy Regional Military Administration head Oleh Hryhorov.
Russian airstrike on Sumy
Zelenskyy said that all emergency services are currently working at the site of the Russian airstrike in Sumy.
"Four guided aerial bombs struck the center of the city, hitting a school building where classes were in session. I thank the teachers and school administration – the children and teachers were in the shelter, and 100 people in total were evacuated in time," he said.

According to Zelenskyy, the residential area also sustained damage. Two people are reported dead, and six others were wounded, including three children.
Hryhorov added that the two residents of Sumy who were killed were in their homes in a residential area.

Sumy Mayor Artem Kobzar published a video showing the aftermath of the Russian strike on the city.
"Preliminarily, one residential building was destroyed, while private homes and an educational institution were damaged," he said.

Later, Sumy City Military Administration head Serhii Kryvosheienko added that Russian forces deliberately targeted a school in Sumy with a 250-kilogram aerial bomb while students — children in grades 1–4 — were inside. The shelter saved them.
The school building in the Zarichnyi district was hit. Other strikes hit one of the city’s cemeteries and private homes in the Kovpakivskyi district. Several private houses were destroyed.
"The bodies of a man and a woman were pulled from the rubble. A 1-year-old child is among the wounded," the official said.

A rescue operation is currently underway in the city. Fires broke out as a result of the Russian airstrikes.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that on September 27, Russian forces launched another attack on Sumy, killing two civilians, including a child.
It was also reported that on the morning of September 26, Russian forces dropped KAB bombs on central Sumy. There were dead and injured, including an 11-month-old child.
