Russia's war against Ukraine can end diplomatically. A ceasefire could be the first step towards this, stated Mike Waltz, the future National Security Advisor to US President-elect Donald Trump, in an interview with ABC News.

Donald Trump's future National Security Advisor said that the ceasefire is an important step that will help the parties move to a negotiated solution.

“Well, we would like to see a ceasefire any minute, any day. I think that would be a positive - an incredibly positive first step on both sides. And it would allow us to enter the framework of some type of negotiated solution,” he emphasized.

According to him, a diplomatic solution to the conflict is inevitable, although the complete expulsion of Russian troops, in particular from Crimea, is considered unrealistic.

“Everybody knows that it has to end somehow diplomatically. I just don't think it's realistic to say that we're going to expel every Russian off every inch of Ukrainian soil, even from Crimea. President Trump has acknowledged this reality,” Waltz emphasized.

He also emphasized the importance of preventing further escalation, which could have global consequences.

“We're already seeing North Korea, we're seeing, you know, the rumblings from South Korea. This is - this thing could expand, and that's what we have to stop,” the adviser emphasized.

Trump is planning a meeting with Putin

During a recent speech to Republican governors, Trump said that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin had expressed a desire to meet. In particular, he added that the meeting was already being prepared, but did not specify specific dates.

Meanwhile, the Russian dictator's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, claimed that Putin, in turn, was ready to meet with Trump and that “no conditions are needed.”
