The Kremlin says that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with the elected US president, Donald Trump, but "political will" is necessary, citing the press secretary of the Russian leader, Dmitry Peskov.

"Putin has repeatedly expressed his openness to contact with international leaders, including US president Donald Trump. The president has repeatedly said this, we have repeatedly said this, and no conditions are required for this," said Peskov.

The press secretary added that a "political will to engage in dialogue and solve existing problems through dialogue" is necessary for a meeting between Trump and Putin.

Peskov says there is no specifics on the meeting yet. He suggested that "there will be moves" when Trump returns to the White House.

Trump announces a meeting with Putin

During a speech before Republican governors, the elected US president Donald Trump said that Russian president Vladimir Putin had expressed a desire to meet. According to him, preparations for the meeting are underway.

Trump did not specify a particular date for the negotiations but confirmed that the meeting is being discussed.

After the November 2024 election, the media reported that the elected president called Putin. According to sources from The Washington Post, Trump advised the Russian leader not to escalate the war in Ukraine.

Trump and Putin both claim they have not spoken since the US election.
