Cabinet Minister Pat McFadden believes that Russia and other adversaries of the United Kingdom are attempting to use AI to intensify cyberattacks on the country's infrastructure, informs The Guardian.

In response to growing threats, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster announced the creation of a research program, the Laboratory for AI Security Research (LASR), in London. The new center will focus on monitoring and analyzing cyber threats, including risks to critical facilities such as power grids.

"Artificial intelligence 'could be weaponized against us'," McFadden will emphasize, adding that the UK is already in a state of constant "cyberwar."

He noted that over the past year, Russia has significantly intensified its hacker attacks on both the UK and NATO allies providing military support to Ukraine.

Since the beginning of Russia's war against Ukraine, Russian hackers have launched cyberattacks targeting governments, think tanks, and businesses in 42 countries supporting Ukraine.

Previously, it was reported that hackers might distribute dangerous emails disguised as "free legal aid."
