Russia-Ukraine war: Situation on the front as of October 17

Ukrainian troops are advancing in the Melitopol and Bakhmut directions. They have also successfully repelled over 10 enemy attacks in the Avdiivka direction, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russia's shelling
During the past 24 hours, there were 72 clashes. In total, the enemy launched 10 missile strikes and 68 airstrikes, conducting 87 shelling attacks with multiple launch rocket systems on the positions of our troops and residential areas. Unfortunately, there were casualties among the civilian population due to Russian terrorist attacks, and private residential homes and other civilian infrastructure were damaged or destroyed.
Aerial strikes were carried out in the following areas:
- Buchky, Chernihiv region
- Pershotravneve, Pishchane, Kharkiv region
- Siversk, Zvanivka, Spirne, Klishchiivka, Novoselivka, Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Maryinka, Novomykhailivka, Staromayorske, Donetsk region
- Mykolaivka, Kozatske, Odradokamianka, Berislav, Tiahynka, Ivanivka, Kherson region
Around 120 populated areas in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions came under artillery fire.
The frontline situation
The operational situation remains relatively stable in the Volyn and Polissya directions.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains a military presence in border areas, actively engaging in sabotage activities to prevent the transfer of Ukrainian forces to critical areas and increasing the density of mine-explosive obstacles along the state border in the Belgorod region.
In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian troops successfully repelled approximately 15 enemy attacks in the areas of Synkivka and Ivanivka in the Kharkiv region, as well as 5 attacks near Stelmakhivka and Nadiya in the Luhansk region.
In the Lyman direction, the enemy did not engage in offensive (assault) actions.
In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 3 enemy attacks in the area of the settlement of Andriivka in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian Defense Forces continue offensive operations south of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, inflicting losses on the enemy in personnel and equipment and consolidating their positions on the achieved front lines.
In the Avdiivka direction, the enemy continues its attempts to encircle Avdiivka. Over the past day, Ukrainian troops repelled over 10 enemy attacks.
In the Maryinka and Shakhtarsk directions, Ukrainian defenders repelled over 15 enemy attacks in the area of Maryinka in the Donetsk region and another 5 attacks south of Zolota Niva and south of Prechystivka in the Donetsk region.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Ukrainian defenders prevented any losses of positions southwest of Novodanylivka, Robotyne, and west of Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region.
In the Kherson direction, the Defense Forces are engaged in counter-battery warfare and successfully target the enemy's depots and rear areas.
Offensive by Ukrainian Armed Forces
Ukrainian defense forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol direction. They have achieved partial success in the area west of Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region. Ukrainian soldiers are inflicting losses on the occupying forces in terms of personnel and equipment, and they are wearing down the enemy along the entire front line.
Enemy losses
During the day, the Defense Forces' aviation conducted 4 strikes on areas where the enemy's personnel, equipment, and military vehicles were concentrated.
Missile troops units hit 2 helicopters on landing pads, an ammunition depot, and an enemy artillery piece.
The total number of losses in the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion amounts to 288,630 military personnel.
