Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 5

Over the past day, January 4, the 1,411th day of the war, 229 combat engagements took place along the front line against Russian forces. For the first time, the Huliaipole direction surpassed the Pokrovsk direction in the number of clashes, becoming the most intense area along the entire front, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.
"The enemy carried out 62 air strikes, dropped 185 guided aerial bombs, and used one missile. In addition, it conducted 4,016 attacks, including 84 from multiple launch rocket systems, and employed 5,232 kamikaze drones," the General Staff said in a statement.
Russian forces shelled areas near the settlements of Velykomykhailivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region and Orikhiv, Preobrazhenka, Pryluky, and Zelene in the Zaporizhzhia region. In response, the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck nine areas of concentration of enemy personnel, weapons, and military equipment, three artillery systems, one electronic warfare system, and two UAV control points.
The General Staff also reported on the situation in various directions:
Northern-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions
99 attacks on positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and populated areas, including from multiple launch rocket systems.
Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction
8 attempts by Russian forces to assault positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were repelled in the areas of Vovchansk, Starytsia, Prylipky, Fyholivka, and toward Izbytske and Kutkivka.
Kupiansk direction
3 Russian attacks were repelled in the areas of Stepova Novoselivka, Pershotravneve, and toward Petropavlivka.
Lyman direction
10 attacks by Russian forces were recorded, with attempts to assault positions of the Defense Forces near the settlements of Novoselivka, Kolodiazne, and Torske.
Sloviansk direction
6 attacks by Russian forces were repelled near Dronivka, Siversk, and Sviato-Pokrovske.
Kramatorsk direction
1 combat engagement was recorded near the settlement of Stupochky.
Kostiantynivka direction
Russian forces carried out 18 attacks in the areas of Pleshchiivka, Oleksandro-Shultyne, Rusyn Yar, Yablunivka, and toward Sofiivka.
Pokrovsk direction
Over the past day, 54 enemy assaults were repelled in the areas of Shakhove, Nykanorivka, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, and toward Novopavlivka.
Oleksandrivka direction
24 attacks by Russian forces were repelled in the areas of Zelenyi Hai, Oleksandrohrad, Sosnivka, Vorone, Oleksiivka, Vyshneve, Solodke, and Yehorivka.
Huliaipole direction
For the first time, it surpassed the Pokrovsk direction in the number of enemy attacks, becoming the most intense along the entire front. Over the past day, 65 Russian attacks were repelled in the areas of Zelene, Huliaipole, Varvarivka, Dorozhnianka, and toward Sviatopetrivka.
Orikhiv direction
8 attempts by Russian forces to assault positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were repelled in the areas of Plavni, Mala Tokmachka, Shcherbaky, and Stepove.
Dnipro direction
No enemy offensive actions were recorded.
As of January 5, daily losses of Russian forces amounted to 990 personnel, up to 200 units of equipment, and more than 700 drones. The total estimated enemy combat losses since February 24, 2022, exceed 1.212 million personnel.
The General Staff also noted a gradual shift in the focus of Russian forces along the front. Instead of the Pokrovsk direction, the most challenging situation involving the enemy is currently in the Huliaipole direction, according to the General Staff's report as of the evening of January 4.
