Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 1

As of 4:00 p.m. Kyiv time on January 1, 2026, the enemy had carried out 45 assaults along the entire frontline. Russian forces are shelling border settlements, causing destruction and posing a threat to civilians, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Since the start of the day, 45 combat engagements have been recorded along the frontline, with the enemy continuing strikes on settlements in the Sumy, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions.
In the Northern-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, one airstrike with a guided bomb and 44 shelling attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and populated areas were recorded.
In the Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction, the enemy attacked fortifications near Vovchansk, while no offensive actions were recorded in the Kupiansk direction.
In the Lyman direction, the aggressor carried out eight attacks near Novovodiane, Myrne, Kolodiazi, Zarichne and Yampil. Four combat engagements are still ongoing.
In the Kostiantynivka direction, the enemy attacked positions near Oleksandro-Shultyne, Pleshchiivka, Rusyn Yar, Yablunivka, Shcherbynivka and Torske. Ukrainian forces repelled nine attacks.
In the Pokrovsk direction, nine attacks were recorded near Nove Shakhove, Rodynske, Chervonyi Lyman, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne and Molodetske.
In the Oleksandrivka direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled seven enemy attacks, with one combat engagement still underway.
In the Huliaipole direction, eight battles were recorded. Enemy aircraft struck Zaliznychne, Sviatopetrivka, Verkhnia Tersa, Huliaipole, Tsvitkove, Pryluky and Varvarivka.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, Ukrainian units successfully repelled two enemy assaults near the Antonivskyi Bridge.
Since 2022, Russia has continued its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, constantly carrying out artillery and air strikes on border regions.
The situation along the frontline remains dynamic: the enemy is actively trying to advance, but Ukrainian units are successfully repelling attacks and maintaining control over most directions.
The General Staff has updated the battle maps for the past day. The hottest direction remains the Pokrovsk direction.
In addition, due to newly received and clarified intelligence data, the General Staff has updated the overall statistics of Russian army losses. From February 24, 2022 to December 31, 2025, the enemy’s estimated losses amounted to about 1,207,910 military personnel.
Over the past day alone, Russian losses totaled 1,060 troops.
