Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of May 17

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports that as of 4:00 PM Kyiv time on May 17, there were 81 combat engagements along the front lines in the past 24 hours. Russian forces carried out the most attacks in the Pokrovsk, Lyman, and Novopavlivka directions.
Enemy shelling
Today, Russian artillery and mortar fire struck several communities:
- Nova Huta, Zarichne, Mariine, Vovkivka, Malushyne, Oleksandrivka, Pokrovka, Brusky, Bachivsk, Starykove, Porozok, Novodmytrivka, Shalyhyne, Petrushivka, Katerynivka, Bilokopytove, Prohres, and Boyaro-Lezhachi in the Sumy region;
- Huta-Studenetska in the Chernihiv region;
- In addition, Russian aircraft struck the town of Bunyakyne in the Sumy region.
Frontline situation
In the Kharkiv direction, Russian forces launched two attacks near Vovchansk and toward Stroivka.
In the Kupiansk direction, Russian forces attacked near Zahryzove.
In the Lyman direction, Russian forces carried out 12 attacks against Ukrainian positions near Novoyehorivka, Lozova, Ridkodub, Hrekivka, Katerynivka, Yampolivka, and Zelena Dolyna. Three combat engagements are still ongoing.
In the Kramatorsk direction, Russian forces are trying to advance near Chasiv Yar, Kurdiumivka, and toward Predtechyne. Ukrainian forces repelled three out of four attacks. One battle is still ongoing.
In the Toretsk direction, Russian forces are attempting to break through Ukrainian forces near Toretsk, Ozarianivka, Diliivka, and Druzhba. Two assaults are currently underway. Ukrainian forces have already repelled eight enemy attacks.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian troops launched 23 attempts to drive Ukrainian forces from their positions near Stara Mykolaivka, Yablunivka, Vozdvyzhenka, Nova Poltavka, Myroliubivka, Yelyzavetivka, Promin, Novoserhiiivka, Troitske, and Andriivka. Ukrainian forces are holding their ground. Seventeen attacks have been repelled, and five combat clashes are still ongoing.
In the Novopavlivka direction, Ukrainian troops repelled nine Russian assaults. Three engagements are still underway. Russian forces tried to advance near Kostiantynopil, Bahatyr, Vilne Pole, Rivnopil, Novopil, and Zelene Pole. Russian aircraft struck Temyrivka and Novopil.
In the Huliaipole direction, Russian aircraft launched strikes using unguided rockets on the town of Huliaipole.
In the Orikhiv direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled three attacks near Stepove and Mali Shcherbaky. Kamianske came under airstrikes.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, Russian forces launched unguided rocket strikes on Mykolaivka. Enemy units also attempted to advance twice. Fighting is still ongoing.
In Russia's Kursk direction, Ukrainian forces repelled seven Russian attacks today. Another engagement is underway. Russian aircraft carried out five airstrikes and dropped five guided bombs. In addition, Russian forces launched 119 artillery strikes targeting Ukrainian positions and civilian settlements.
The enemy's losses
Over the past day, from May 16 to May 17, Russian forces lost 910 personnel in combat. Ukrainian forces also destroyed six tanks, seven armored fighting vehicles, and 34 Russian artillery systems.
