Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 16

Ukrainian soldiers continue to hold positions on the left bank of the Dnipro River, repelling Russian attacks near Krasnohorivka (the Donetsk region) and destroying an enemy ammunition depot, according to the data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian attacks
The operational situation in the east and south of Ukraine remains challenging. Over the past day, there were 85 combat clashes. In total, the enemy launched 2 missile and 13 aviation strikes, and conducted 32 shelling attacks from multiple rocket launch systems on our troops' positions and civilian settlements.
Unfortunately, due to Russian terrorist attacks, there are civilian casualties. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure have suffered damage and destruction.
Frontline situation
In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains unchanged without significant shifts. There are no signs of the formation of advancing enemy groups. Identified units of the Armed Forces of Belarus are performing tasks in border areas with Ukraine.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains military presence in border areas, conducts sabotage-reconnaissance activities, fires on populated areas from the territory of the Russian Federation, and increases the density of mine-explosive barriers along the state border of Ukraine.
About 20 populated areas, including Hremyachka, Mykhailchyna-Sloboda in the Chernihiv region; Sosnivka, Atynske, Volfyne, Stepok in the Sumy region; Udy, Vovchansk, Okhrimivka, Zemlyanky in the Kharkiv region, suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy did not conduct offensive actions. About 10 populated areas, including Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove in the Kharkiv region, were shelled with artillery and mortars.
In the Lyman direction, our defenders repelled 9 enemy attacks in the areas of Terny, Yampolivka, and Torske in the Donetsk region, and another 15 attacks near Makiivka, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and north of Hryhorivka, Vesele in the Donetsk region.
Approximately 15 populated areas, including Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Torske, Hryhorivka, Serebrianka, Verkhniokamianske, Spirne, Rozdolivka in the Donetsk region, suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Bakhmut direction, the Defense Forces repelled 6 enemy attacks in the areas of Ivanivka, Klyshchiivka, and Andriivka in the Donetsk region. The enemy delivered an aviation strike near Bohdanivka in the Donetsk region. About 10 populated areas, including Vasiukivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivka, Klishchiivka, Andriivka, New York in the Donetsk region, came under artillery and mortar fire.
In the Avdiivka direction, our defenders repelled 15 enemy attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, and Avdiivka, and another 15 attacks near Pervomaiske and Nevelske in the Donetsk region. Here, the occupiers, with the support of aviation, tried to improve their tactical position.
About 15 populated areas, including Keramik, Berdychiv, Stepove, Lastochkyne, and Nevelske in the Donetsk region, suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Maryinka direction, the Defense Forces continue to restrain the enemy in the areas of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Maryinka, and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. In this direction, invaders, supported by aviation, tried 16 times unsuccessfully to break through the defense of our troops.
In addition, the enemy launched an aviation strike in the area of the settlement of Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region. Under artillery and mortar fire were Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, Kostiantynivka, and Katerynivka.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy did not conduct offensive (storming) actions. They launched an aviation strike in the area of Vodiane in the Donetsk region. More than 10 populated areas, including Vodiane, Prechystivka, Blahodatne, Staromykhailivske, Urozhaine in the Donetsk region, suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, our defenders repelled an enemy attack west of Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region, where the enemy unsuccessfully tried to regain lost ground.
Approximately 25 populated areas, including Poltavka, Malynivka, Chervone, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka in the Zaporizhzhia region, suffered from enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Kherson direction, the regional center of the Kherson region and the areas of the settlements Antonivka, Dniprovske, and Tyagynka in the Kherson region were shelled by enemy artillery.
Advance by the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The enemy does not abandon the intention to dislodge Ukrainian units from bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro.
During the day, the enemy unsuccessfully stormed our troops' positions 6 times.
Enemy losses
During the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces struck one area of concentration of enemy personnel, weapons, and military equipment. Also, one guided aviation missile Kh-59 was destroyed by the forces and means of Ukraine's air defense.
Missile troops caused damage to one area of concentration of enemy personnel, one command post, and one ammunition depot.
It should be noted that the total number of losses of the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion is 372,090 military personnel.
