Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of August 23

Ukrainian military continues to advance in the Zaporizhzhia region, repelled a Russian attack in the Luhansk region, and destroyed 2 Russian control points, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian shelling continues
During the past 24 hours, the enemy launched 9 rocket strikes and 49 aerial attacks, conducting 40 artillery bombardments using multiple rocket launch systems on our forces' positions and civilian settlements.
Additionally, today the occupiers carried out another attack on Ukrainian territory, using the UAV Shahed-136/131. Our air defense managed to destroy 12 enemy attack drones.
Unfortunately, due to the Russian terrorist attacks, there have been casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Residential buildings, port infrastructure, schools, and other civilian structures have also suffered damage.
The likelihood of missile and aerial strikes across the entire territory of Ukraine remains high.
Frontline situation
During the past 24 hours, there were 16 clashes.
In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains relatively unchanged.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Romny and Konstiantynivka in the Sumy region and Dovzhyk and Chugunivka in the Kharkiv region.
The adversary carried out mortar and artillery shelling on over 15 populated areas, including Bleshnia in the Chernihiv region; Iskryshkivshchyna, Pokrovka, Riasne in the Sumy region, and Ohirtseve, Hatysche, Krasnyi Yar in the Kharkiv region.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy engaged in unsuccessful offensive actions in the vicinity of Novoiehorivka in the Luhansk region. They also launched aerial strikes in the areas of Shyikivka in the Kharkiv region and Tverdokhlibove in the Luhansk region.
Populated areas such as Hryanykivka, Masiutivka, Synkivka, Kupiansk, Pershotravneve, Orlanske in the Kharkiv region experienced artillery and mortar shelling by the enemy.
In the Lyman direction, over 30 populated areas were subjected to enemy artillery shelling, including Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Yampil, Zakitne, Verkhniokamianske, Ivano-Dariivka, Spirne in the Donetsk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, the enemy carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the region of Vesele in the Donetsk region. They also conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Spirne, Klishchiivka, Andriivka, Bila Hora in the Donetsk region.
Over 25 populated areas were affected by enemy artillery shelling, including Nykyforivka, Vasylivka, Zaliznianske, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka in the Donetsk Region.
In the Avdiivka direction, populated areas such as Avdiivka, Tonenke, Siverne, Vodiane, Pervomaiske, Nevelske in the Donetsk region experienced artillery shelling.
In the Maryinka direction, the defensive forces continue to repel the Russian troops' advancement in the vicinity of Maryinka in the Donetsk region.
Populated areas like Krasnohirka, Maryinka, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, Kostiantynivka, Katerynivka in the Donetsk region were subjected to artillery shelling.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, over 10 populated areas were affected by enemy artillery shelling, including Novoukrainka, Prechystivka, Zolota Niva, Shakhtarske, Blahodatne, Urozhaine in the Donetsk region.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the enemy engaged in unsuccessful offensive actions in the region of Mala Tokmachka in the Zaporizhzhia region. They conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Orikhiv and Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.
Over 20 populated areas were affected by enemy artillery shelling, including Mahdalynivka, Lukianivske, Pavlivka, Piatykhatky, and Plavne in the Zaporizhzhia region.
In the Kherson direction, the enemy carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Beryslav, Odradokamianka, Lvove, and Kherson in the Kherson region, and Izmail in the Odesa region.
Areas such as Kherson, Yantarna, Veletenske, Kizomysh, Sofiyivka, and Shyroka Balka in the Kherson region were affected by enemy artillery shelling.
Advance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces
Simultaneously, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol direction, consolidating their positions on the achieved frontlines and conducting counter-battery measures.
Enemy losses
During the day, the defense aviation delivered 1 strike on a command post, 10 strikes on personnel concentration areas, and 1 strike on an anti-aircraft missile system of the enemy.
Units of the missile troops and artillery of the Ukrainian forces inflicted hits on 2 command posts, 1 personnel concentration area, armament, military equipment, and 2 artillery pieces in the enemy's firing positions.
The total number of losses in the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion amounts to 258,820 military personnel.
