Russia strikes Ukrainian army training unit: Casualties reported

Russia launched a missile strike on the location of a Ukrainian Ground Forces training unit, killing 12 servicemembers and injuring more than 60 others, according to the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
"Today, June 1, the enemy carried out a missile strike on the location of one of the training units of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Unfortunately, there are both killed and wounded servicemembers," the statement reads.
The military emphasized that no formations or mass gatherings of personnel were taking place at the time of the strike.
"After the air raid alert was announced, most of the personnel were in shelters. All necessary qualified medical assistance is being provided to the wounded," the Ground Forces added.
As of 12:50 p.m., it is known that 12 servicemembers were killed and more than 60 injured.
To determine all the circumstances and causes of the personnel losses, the Command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has set up a commission and launched an internal investigation. The command and personnel of the Eastern Operational Command will also fully support the work of law enforcement agencies.
"If it is established that the deaths and injuries of servicemembers were caused by the actions or inaction of officials, those responsible will be held strictly accountable," the statement added.
At the same time, additional security measures are being taken to protect the lives and health of servicemembers amid ongoing missile and air strikes by the aggressor on rear areas.
Russia likely used an Iskander
According to Vitalii Sarantsev, spokesperson for the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, preliminary information suggests the strike was carried out with an Iskander missile, but "final confirmation will come once experts examine the site."
"At the time the air raid alert was issued, all personnel were in shelters, except for those who possibly didn’t make it in time," he said.
Russian strikes on Ukrainian military positions
As reported, Russia recently launched a missile strike on a military training range in Sumy region on May 20. The attack resulted in casualties and injuries among Ukrainian troops.
As a reminder, in 2023 Russia struck the personnel of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade in Zaporizhzhia region. At the time, an award ceremony was being held for Artillery Day on November 3. Around 20 Ukrainian servicemembers were killed and about 30 others, including civilians, were wounded.
