Russia strikes training ground in Ukraine's Sumy region: 6 soldiers killed, over 10 injured

Russia launched a missile attack on a training ground in the Sumy region on May 20. The attack resulted in casualties and injuries among the Ukrainian military, according to the National Guard of Ukraine.
"As a result of the strike, 6 servicemen were killed and more than 10 were injured during training at the military unit's shooting range," the statement said.
The National Guard Command and law enforcement agencies will give a legal assessment of the actions of officials based on the results of the inspection and investigation of the tragic incident. According to the National Guard, algorithms of actions were previously developed, and all necessary orders were given to act under the threat of Russian air strikes, as well as to prevent violations of security measures and the accumulation of personnel.
An internal investigation is underway into the death of the soldiers. The commander of the military unit has been suspended, and the necessary information has been provided to law enforcement.
"The investigation will provide a legal assessment of the actions of all persons who made the relevant decisions. The National Guard of Ukraine will provide all necessary information and assistance," the National Guard added.
On the evening of May 20, it was reported online that Russian troops had attacked a training ground of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Sumy region. According to journalists and some military officials, Russia allegedly hit the training ground where Ukrainian troops were training with an Iskander.

On March 1, 2025, a tragedy occurred in the Dnipropetrovsk region - the Russian army launched a missile attack on a training ground where Ukrainian soldiers of the 157th Separate Mechanized Brigade were training. The Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Russian attack resulted in casualties and injuries among the Ukrainian military.
Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi specified that the Russians had struck with an Iskander-M ballistic missile with a cluster munition.
The Army Commander ordered an investigation with the participation of military counterintelligence. The State Bureau of Investigation, in turn, opened a criminal investigation under the article of negligence.
